UN supports Argentina's boost to the Economic and Social Council

The United Nations strongly supported on Tuesday the Economic and Social Council boosted by Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez to reach a sustainable and inclusive development in the country.

The president received UN representatives working in this nation on Tuesday, and appreciated the work they have been doing here for years, especially in Covid-19 times, since the UN agencies have provided their support and recommendations during the current crisis, in addition to their collaboration with the design of the government's plan of action to fight against the novel coronavirus.

According to a press release from the Presidency, during the meeting at the presidential residence, government and UN officials discussed possibilities of cooperation on the main challenges for the country's development in a post-pandemic scenario.

On delving into the formation of the Economic and Social Council for Argentine Development, the president explained that they are ready to implement this tool soon, and the UN's opinion will be wisely heard, and be deemed as a great contribution to its creation.

The meeting's participants were the UN resident coordinator in Argentina, Roberto Valent; the director of the Office of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in the country, Pedro Furtado de Oliveira, and the local representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Rene Mauricio Valdes.

In addition, other leaders were present by videoconference, as the director of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Martin Abeles, the UN Deputy Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director Luis Felipe Lopez Calva.
