Biden: Trump 'sort of like Goebbels,' 'more Castro than Churchill'
During an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle, the former vice president was asked by the host to combat the president’s “lie” that Mr. Biden is a socialist.
“He’s sort of like Goebbels,” Mr. Biden responded. “You say the lie long enough, keep repeating it, repeating it, repeating it, it becomes common knowledge, they think.
“Trump is using socialism to scare and distract Floridians from a failed pandemic,” he continued. “Look, here’s the guy — he’s refused to grant temporary protective status to Venezuelans, he’s embraced dictators around the world. It’s ridiculous.
“You know, I think people see very clearly the difference between me and Donald Trump,” he added. “Trump is, you know — Trump is clearing protests in front of the White House that are peaceful, you know, with the military. This guy is more Castro than Churchill.”
The Trump campaign slammed the comparison.
“Rather than launching preposterous accusations against the president, Joe Biden and his team should answer for inviting notorious anti-Semites Tamika Mallory and Linda Sarsour to speak at the Democrat National Convention,” Ken Farnaso, the campaign’s deputy national press secretary, said in a statement to Fox News. “Biden is desperately trying to distract Americans from his disastrous record and socialist policies.”
Mr. Biden’s campaign doubled down on the nominee’s comments Monday after CNN host Anderson Cooper asked deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield whether voters should expect the same kind of “name-calling” from Mr. Biden when he takes on Mr. Trump during their first presidential debate Tuesday night.
“Because, obviously, invoking Nazis is quite a stretch,” Mr. Cooper added.
“Look,” Ms. Bedingfield answered. “His point was you cannot trust what comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth. That’s a tragedy. Donald Trump is the American president, you can’t trust what comes out of his mouth. What you’re going to see from Biden on Tuesday night is, I think, an incredibly different path, a different choice. If you are somebody looking at four years of Donald Trump and you’re asking yourself, do I feel safer, do I feel more secure than I did four years ago,’and the answer is no, you’re going to see an alternative in Joe Biden.
“He’s going to be laying out his positive policy agenda and I think the comparison between the two, a president who cannot tell the truth and somebody in Biden who has told the truth his entire career, who has been a champion for working people,” she said. “Again, I think that that comparison is going to be really, really self-evident on the stage on Tuesday night.”
