How Germany’s far-right gained, even as it lost

The AfD now finds itself once again a pariah within the halls of power, as Germany’s other parties in parliament refuse to partner with a faction linked to far-right extremism. Their place in German politics is “not a danger for democracy,” Hajo Funke, a German academic who focuses on right-wing extremism, told my colleagues. “They will remain completely isolated.”

The ‘Great Resignation’ goes global

In Latin America and the Caribbean, 26 million people lost their jobs last year amid pandemic-era shutdowns, according to the U.N.'s International Labour Organization. The vast majority of jobs that have returned are in the informal sector, an outcome that often means even lower pay and greater precarity in a region already defined by profound economic inequality.

An upcoming climate summit is supposed to save the planet. But pessimism is building.

The upcoming meeting in Glasgow, Guterres insisted, presents a possible turning point in the face of looming calamity. “We are on the verge of the abyss and when you are on the verge of the abyss, you need to be very careful about what the next step is,” he said. “And the next step is COP26 in Glasgow.”

The Merkel era is about to end

But we are now in the deep twilight of the Merkel era. In less than two weeks, Germans will elect a new government and Merkel will have no part in it. Her political party, the center-right Christian Democrats, may for the first time in a generation find itself sitting in the opposition absent its talismanic leader

South Africa’s riots are a warning to the world

What happened in South Africa is what happens when the gross inequality that shapes a whole society boils over. And it’s also what happens when a major political faction and influential leader prioritize their own interests over the integrity of their country’s democracy.

Wealthy nations still aren’t doing enough during the pandemic

Some analysts predict that many countries in the developing world may only be fully immunized against the coronavirus by 2024. That gap, many experts fear, will lead to new deadly waves of the virus as it circulates and evolves.

Biden and the waning of the ‘neoliberal’ era

Biden’s seeming abandonment of the legacy of neoliberalism may also extend to trade policy. It’s unclear to what extent the new administration may actually depart from the more protectionist course set by its nationalist predecessor.

Biden’s border ‘crisis’ has little to do with the border

The key countries in question are the three nations of Central America’s so-called Northern Triangle: Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. For years, the countries have been hobbled by ruinous governance, natural disasters and an epidemic of gang- and cartel-driven violence.

Biden’s window with Iran is starting to close

President Biden and his allies promised a new beginning. Their administration would repair the damage wrought by former president Donald Trump when he scrapped U.S. participation in the nuclear deal with Iran. Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign would cease and Biden would salvage a diplomatic agreement that, among other things, was the crowning U.S. foreign policy achievement when he was vice president.

Brazil’s rolling coronavirus disaster is a threat to the world

In the tortuous course of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been at least one constant: Latin America’s most populous nation has not handled it well. Brazil lags behind only the United States in coronavirus-related deaths and infections. But the latter is starting to battle its way out of the pandemic; in Brazil, the outbreak is now worse than it has ever been.

The limits of Biden’s American exceptionalism

A few days after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Today’s WorldView proclaimed the “end of the road for American exceptionalism.” On one hand, we saw the limits of the political imagination of the Washington establishment. Journalists and lawmakers, struggling to come to terms with the stark domestic realities that stoked a violent assault on the heart of American democracy, cast the events as something alien and unfathomable — something that should only happen elsewhere. On the other hand, the insurrection led to an outpouring of either mockery or pity from other parts of the world. U.S. adversaries pointed to the failings of the American political system; allies saw the United States shift from being a global exemplar to a cautionary tale.
